Training and Development
Our program allows for the alignment of staff training and development with the university’s strategic goals in the short-, mid- and long-term. The framework proposed, that of management by competencies, offers to incorporate some of the principal recommendations of the Task Force to Review Human Resources (1998), while pointing the way towards an integration of other human resources functions such as remuneration, performance appraisal, and others.
Training and Development offerings will bridge the gap between the competencies now present in the university workforce and those we need in order to attain strategic goals. These competencies must reflect the values of the University community and define desirable core skills, knowledge, and behaviours, see "Key Competencies at Concordia" [PDF].
The new plan puts forward a model in which the supervisor/manager is trained to act as a coach and as a staff “developer”; staff monitors chart their learning and training opportunities with their managers’ input and guidance; HR customizes the training to the department/unit needs, rendering these opportunities more relevant to their beneficiaries.
The aim is to work towards developing a learning organization where information and knowledge flow and where the university trains its employees not only to do their work but to understand why they are doing it and how they fit in the larger context. Enhancing employees’ knowledge and ability to learn will serve to develop a more versatile and polyvalent workforce and improve overall performance.
This program is designed to provide fair and reliable contribution feedback to employees and bring clarity to roles and mission whereby proficiency in the competencies is demonstrated through behaviour and the attainment of team and individual goals.
